Modern studio apartments on the farm Norður-Foss, on the road to Reynisfjara black sand beach and a few minutes from Vík. Each has a kitchenette and a private patio facing Dyrhólaey and the shore. They suit couples, families and friends who like to cook for themselves and stay two nights or more.
Norður-Foss near Vík í Mýrdal, South IcelandBlack Beach Suites stand in open farmland at Norður-Foss in Mýrdalur, south of Mýrdalsjökull glacier and west of the mountain that separates Reynisfjara from the village of Vík. The suites are in low buildings with large windows, and each apartment looks across the fields to the black shore and the Dyrhólaey headland.
Each suite is a self-contained studio apartment with its own entrance, kitchenette, bathroom and patio. It is a simple idea done well. You park outside, let yourself in and have your own space, but there is still a reception and a small bar in the main building if you want company or a drink.
The location is the strongest point. Reynisfjara, the best-known black sand beach in Iceland, is less than ten minutes away by car, Vík is about ten minutes in the other direction, and the south coast waterfalls and glaciers are an easy drive to the west. That makes the suites a comfortable base for two to four nights, instead of a single rushed night in Vík.
We like it for travellers on a self-drive trip who want more room than a hotel offers, a fridge for their own food and a quiet evening looking out at the view.
As a local travel agency in Iceland, we can book Black Beach Suites for you and fit it into a South Coast itinerary. Use the Ask us to book it button and tell us your dates.
There are three kinds of suite. All are studio apartments with underfloor heating, a walk-in shower, a kitchenette with fridge, stove, microwave, toaster and utensils, a coffee machine with complimentary coffee, a flat-screen TV with Netflix, free Wi-Fi and a private patio facing the Dyrhólaey cliffs and the shore. Towels, soap and hair products and a hairdryer are provided.
The suites are self-catering. The kitchenette is fine for breakfast, pasta or a simple dinner, and Vík has a supermarket where you can stock up on the way. There is no breakfast service that we know of, so buy what you need for the morning.
In the main building there is a lounge and bar for guests, serving drinks and bar snacks until midnight. It is a pleasant place to end the day, and a good spot to ask the staff about road and weather conditions.
For a full meal, drive to Vík, where there are several restaurants and cafés, or to the restaurant by the car park at Reynisfjara. In summer it is wise to book a table or eat early.
The suites are well placed for short trips along the South Coast. These are the things to do in the area, with driving times from the door.
