About the Northern Lights minibus tour

The Northern Lights are never guaranteed. You need dark skies, clear weather and solar activity all at once. On this tour your guide checks the aurora and cloud forecasts before and during the night and drives to wherever the chances look best, away from the lights of Reykjavík.

Because it is a minibus with a small group, the guide can move quickly between spots and there are fewer people at each stop. When the lights appear, the guide takes photos of you with the aurora and sends them to you after the tour at no extra cost. Hot chocolate and local chocolate help against the cold.

The tour lasts 3–5 hours, depending on how far you need to drive. Much of the time is spent waiting outside in the dark, often well below freezing, so dress much warmer than you think you need. If you don't see the lights, you can rebook for free on the regular Northern Lights bus tour on another night.

The season runs from September to April, and the darkest months, October to March, give the best chances. Book it early in your trip, so you have nights left to use the free retry.

Amazing northern lights

We had an amazing tour and the northern lights were better than I could have hoped for!

No lights this time, but still a nice tour

We didn’t get lucky with the Northern Lights on our night out—too many clouds. BUT the guide tried really hard, drove us around for hours, and shared lots of stories. At least we got to see the stars and some beautiful landscapes at night. We are booked to go again at the end of our trip - used the free reschedule.

Good value for money

We wanted something affordable but still good, and this tour nailed it. Minibus was comfy, guide was knowledgeable, and yes, we saw the lights! Not super strong at first but they got brighter. Can’t complain at all.

Romantic night for us

Went with my boyfriend and it was super romantic. The group was small and quiet, so when the aurora showed up it felt like it was just for us. Probably my favorite memory from Iceland.

Friendly guide and great vibes!

Our guide was honestly the best part—funny, chill, and clearly loved his job. The lights were incredible, but even during the wait he kept us entertained with stories and jokes. Felt more like a night out with friends.

Lucky night

We almost canceled because of clouds, but so glad we didn’t. The driver chased clear skies for over an hour and found this little valley with no clouds. We saw faint pinks and purples too! Felt very lucky.
