The Super Jeep lets your guide use back roads and pull-offs that bigger buses cannot reach, which improves the odds of clear, dark sky. The route changes with the cloud cover. Hot cocoa and chocolate are included along the way.

About the Northern Lights super jeep tour

This tour goes looking for the northern lights in a super jeep rather than a big coach, which means your guide can reach quieter roads away from Reykjavík's light pollution. It runs on evenings from August to April, when the sky is dark enough to have a chance of seeing the aurora.

The northern lights are a natural phenomenon and never guaranteed on any tour. Your guide watches the forecast and cloud cover through the day and picks the best direction to drive, sometimes changing plans at short notice. If nothing appears on your night, you get a free retry (on a minibus) valid for up to three years.

Dress warmly. You will be outside in the cold for stretches while watching the sky, and winter nights in Iceland can be well below freezing. The tour can be cancelled on short notice if the weather makes it pointless to go out.

A magical moment under the aurora

I did this tour with my partner. The Super Jeep tour felt intimate—even though there were other people, the guide moved us away from crowds. Under a nearly moonless sky, the aurora rippled overhead. Probably one of the most romantic nights I’ve experienced.

Comfort + adventure combined well

The night was well balanced: plenty of adventure off-road, but also comfort when waiting for the lights (blankets, warm drinks, friendly guide). The lights didn’t show immediately, but when they did, the whole sky lit up. Would book this again.

Short drive, big lights

I was worried we’d have to drive forever, but the super jeep took us to perfect spots not far from Reykjavik. The views of mountains and snow, plus those green and purple aurora curtains—just wow. So glad we chose the Super Jeep over a standard minibus.

Photographer’s dream

This was hands down the best northern lights tour for someone who loves photography. Our guide helped with camera settings, tripod placements, and scouting the right spots away from city lights. The Super Jeep’s ability to go into rugged terrain gave us vantage points I wouldn’t have thought possible.

Family evening we’ll never forget

We did this tour with our two kids (ages 8 & 11). The guides were patient and made the night exciting—not too cold, kept us cozy, and very safe. The lights eventually appeared in full glory. Definitely memorable and something the kids still talk about months later.

Luxury ride and magical sky

The Super Jeep was very comfortable and warm inside. We were picked up in Reykjavík, driven away from light pollution, and treated to hot chocolate while waiting for the lights. When they appeared, the reflection off the snow and landscape was breathtaking. A premium northern lights experience.
