Ísafjörður is the largest town in the Westfjords, with about 2,700 people, built on a narrow sandspit inside Skutulsfjörður and backed by steep mountains. It was first settled in the 9th century and had grown into an important trading post by the 16th, and its centre still has some of Iceland's oldest surviving wooden buildings, clustered at Neðstikaupstaður near the harbour.

Dynjandi is the largest waterfall in the Westfjords. Rather than one narrow drop, it spreads out like a bridal veil as it falls about 100 metres down the mountainside above Arnarfjörður, about 30 metres wide at the top and 60 at the base. Six smaller named waterfalls step down the slope below it, so the walk up passes seven in all.

Naustahvilft, the 'Troll Seat', is a large crescent-shaped hollow high on the mountainside above Ísafjörður, tied to folklore about a troll woman resting there. It is included when time and weather allow, and it involves a steeper walk up.

About the private Dynjandi waterfall tour from Ísafjörður

This is a private day out from Ísafjörður into some of the Westfjords' best scenery, with your own guide and vehicle rather than a shared coach. The route usually starts with a short walk through Ísafjörður's old town, then heads out to Dynjandi, the waterfall most people picture when they think of the Westfjords.

Dynjandi is really a series of falls, widening as it drops down a hillside in broad, terraced steps, and it's a highlight even by Icelandic standards. Depending on time and conditions, your guide may also take you to Naustahvilft, a large hollow high on a mountainside above Ísafjörður known locally as the Troll Seat, and to a botanical garden back in town.

The Westfjords see far fewer visitors than the rest of Iceland, and the roads out to Dynjandi are long and can be affected by weather, so this tour runs from May to September when conditions are more reliable. Because it's private, your guide can adjust the day around your ship's schedule and what your group wants to see.
