Dynjandi is the largest waterfall in the Westfjords. Rather than one narrow drop, it spreads out like a bridal veil as it falls about 100 metres down the mountainside above Arnarfjörður, about 30 metres wide at the top and 60 at the base. Six smaller named waterfalls step down the slope below it, so the walk up passes seven in all.

About the Dynjandi waterfall shore excursion

Dynjandi is the best-known waterfall in the Westfjords, and it is hard to reach without a car. This shore excursion takes you there from the cruise dock in Ísafjörður in about three and a half hours, with the timing built around the ship schedule.

The drive is a big part of the trip. You go through the Vestfjarðagöng mountain tunnel and along fjords, past small villages and steep, flat-topped mountains. Dynjandi itself falls about 100 m down the mountainside, spreading from roughly 30 m wide at the top to 60 m at the bottom, like a bridal veil. Below it, a string of smaller waterfalls tumbles down to the sea.

From the car park a rocky path climbs past the smaller falls to the base of the main one, about a 15-minute walk up. It is uneven and can be wet, so wear good shoes. If you prefer not to climb, the view from the bottom is still good.

On the way back you stop at Gemlufall, a working farm on the shore of Dýrafjörður. You have coffee or tea with hjónabandssæla, a traditional oat and rhubarb cake, and in summer you can meet the Icelandic horses. Westfjords weather changes quickly, even in summer, so bring a rain jacket.

Wild Beauty & Warm Guide

What a memory! Driving into the fjord, breathing fresh air, seeing rugged cliffs, then arriving at the waterfall was just spectacular. Our guide stood out: warm, enthusiastic, knew local history, and kept everything smooth. Loved the village stops, too.

Magical Waterfall Experience

Dynjandi is even more powerful in person than in photos. The cascading tiers of waterfall are dramatic and beautiful. Our guide was knowledgeable and patient; he even helped with better vantage points for photos. A highlight of our Westfjords visit.

Family-Friendly & Beautiful

We did this tour with our two kids, aged 8 and 11, and it was ideal. The walking at Dynjandi is easy for families, and the guide took care to explain things in a way everyone could enjoy. Stopping in Hrafnseyri was a bonus—so peaceful. A wonderful break from the busy ports.

A Scenic Day Without the Crowds

We were on a cruise ship and wanted something off the beaten path. This tour was perfect. The views of Dynjandi were unforgettable, and the villages along the route were charming. The guide clearly knew the area, timed our stops perfectly for photos, and answered every question. Fantastic tour but I would probably go with the jeep tour next time!

Majestic Dynjandi & Hidden Villages

Absolutely breathtaking! The drive to Dynjandi through the fjords was stunning, but getting up close to the waterfall itself really stole the show. Our guide was exceptional—full of stories about the Westfjords, geology, and local folklore. We stopped in Tingeyri and Flateyri too, which added a lovely human touch to all the natural beauty. Highly recommend for anyone who wants to feel nature and culture together.

Stunning waterfall and a great guide

Dynjandi was most definitely the most stunning waterfall we have seen! Our guide, Oli, was the best and we had an absolutely fantastic time on this beautiful day in the westfjords.
