Ísafjörður is the largest town in the Westfjords, with about 2,700 people, built on a narrow sandspit inside Skutulsfjörður and backed by steep mountains. It was first settled in the 9th century and had grown into an important trading post by the 16th, and its centre still has some of Iceland's oldest surviving wooden buildings, clustered at Neðstikaupstaður near the harbour.

Dynjandi is the largest waterfall in the Westfjords. Rather than one narrow drop, it spreads out like a bridal veil as it falls about 100 metres down the mountainside above Arnarfjörður, about 30 metres wide at the top and 60 at the base. Six smaller named waterfalls step down the slope below it, so the walk up passes seven in all.

A bowl in a flat-topped mountain where, legend says, a troll sat. A short but steep walk leads up to the viewpoint, for those who feel like it.

About the Ísafjörður private tour

The Westfjords are the least visited part of Iceland, reached by long roads around narrow fjords, so a private tour with a local guide is a comfortable way to see the highlights in a single day from Ísafjörður. Your guide drives, so you can watch the fjord scenery go by rather than the road.

Ísafjörður itself is a small fishing town with old wooden buildings and a dramatic setting under steep mountains. From there the day usually continues out along the fjord roads towards Dynjandi, a broad waterfall that fans out in several tiers down a mountainside and is the single most photographed spot in the Westfjords.

Because it is private, the exact stops and pace can be adjusted to your group and to the weather, which changes quickly in this part of Iceland. Roads here are mostly single-lane through tunnels and around fjords, so travel times can be longer than distances suggest.

Best experience in Iceland

Last July, my family and I went on a private tour around the Westfjords and Dynjandi, and it was one of the best experiences we had in Iceland! Our guide was incredibly knowledgeable, and the landscapes were beyond stunning. Dynjandi waterfall, with its impressive cascade, was a highlight for all of us. We also explored charming, remote villages and picturesque fjords that we would have never discovered on our own.One of my favorite parts was the peaceful atmosphere—everything felt so untouched. The tour was flexible, allowing us to go at our own pace and stop wherever we wanted. It was the perfect balance of adventure and relaxation. Highly recommend this for anyone wanting to explore a less-traveled part of Iceland!
Best, Sarah Thompson
