About the Hvammsvík hot springs from Reykjavík
Hvammsvík is on the shore of Hvalfjörður, about 45 minutes' drive north of Reykjavík. It has eight natural hot spring pools on a black sand beach, from a cold ocean plunge pool up to the Old Hot Spring at around 39–42°C. Some pools stay warm, while others rise and fall with the tide, and one tidal pool can disappear under the sea at high tide.
Between pools you can swim in the North Atlantic, and there is a sauna and steam room looking over the fjord, a swim-up bar and a bistro serving Nordic food. It is smaller and more natural than the big lagoons, with mountain and fjord views on all sides.
The weather is part of the experience. In winter you may bathe in snow or darkness, and in summer the evenings stay light. Wind can be strong by the sea, so bring a hat for the walk between pools.
The bus drive is part of the trip, along the coast north of Reykjavík with views of Esja and the fjord. You get roughly two and a half hours at the springs before the bus heads back.

Great alternative to the Blue Lagoon
Our Blue Lagoon tour go cancelled because of the volcano eruption in December 2023 and Iceland Travel Guide recommended this tour for us instead. It was a great choice and the tour went on very smoothly. The weather was beautiful, cold but still and the fjord and surrounding mountains were beautiful. Would like to go to the Blue Lagoon one day, but this was a great experience.
