Borgarfjörður Eystri sits well off the Ring Road in East Iceland, and the drive in itself passes through dramatic mountain scenery, including a stretch of colourful rhyolite similar to what you find in the highlands.
The village has one of the most accessible puffin colonies in Iceland at Hafnarhólmi, with a viewing platform close enough to watch the birds without disturbing them.
Hiking trails around the village range from short walks to longer routes into the surrounding mountains, popular with hikers looking for quieter trails than the more visited parts of Iceland.
Puffins are present roughly from April to August, and the village is best visited between late spring and early autumn when access and services are easiest.
At Hafnarhólmi, a small harbour with a viewing platform right next to the nesting cliffs, one of the easiest places in Iceland to see puffins up close.
About 70 km, roughly an hour's drive through mountain scenery.
Roughly April to August, though they are most reliably seen from May to July.
Yes, it has a range of trails from easy walks to longer hikes into the colourful mountains around the village.
It is possible but the drive in can be affected by weather, and some services and the puffin colony are seasonal, so summer is the easier time to visit.
