The Grey Ridge mountain bike tour starts at Hafnarhólmi in Borgarfjörður Eystri with a hike up to Brúnavíkurskarð pass, then a ride along a hand-cut ridge trail and a 3km descent back down, finishing with a stop at the puffin marina.
This tour combines hiking and e-biking in one route. It starts at the Hafnarhólmi parking area in Borgarfjörður Eystri, where most riders also stop to see the puffin colony. From there you hike uphill for about 1.5 hours to reach Brúnavíkurskarð, a mountain pass, gaining roughly 350 metres of elevation on foot.
At the pass you get on a full-suspension e-bike, fitted to you beforehand, and follow a hand-cut trail along the Grey Ridge with views over the fjords below. The descent back down to Hafnarhólmi covers about 3 kilometres and is the technical highlight of the tour, so some mountain biking experience helps, though your guide talks you through the terrain.
The tour finishes back where it started, with a stop at the Hafnarhólmi puffin marina and some guide commentary on the colony. It suits people with moderate fitness who are comfortable with a variable, sometimes technical, downhill trail.
No, the climb to the pass is done on foot; the e-bike is used for the ridge trail and the descent.
Yes, some experience is required, as the 3 km descent is over variable terrain. Your guide talks you through it.
Hafnarhólmi has a puffin colony in season, roughly May to August; outside that window you will not see puffins there.
Weather-appropriate outdoor clothing and sturdy footwear for the hiking section.
