This midnight sun whale watching tour leaves Reykjavík's Old Harbour in the evening, using the long summer light to look for whales in Faxaflói Bay well after most other boats have come in for the day.
Around the summer solstice, Iceland barely gets dark, and this tour is built around that: an evening sailing out of Reykjavík's Old Harbour into Faxaflói Bay, when the water is often calmer and the light takes on the long golden tones of the midnight sun.
Faxaflói is home to minke whales for much of the year, and there's a chance of dolphins, porpoises and, less often, humpback or other larger whales. As with any wildlife trip, sightings are likely but never guaranteed, and your guide will explain the behaviour of whatever you come across.
It only runs in summer, when the extended daylight makes a late departure worthwhile. Dress warmly regardless of the hour: even on a calm summer evening, the wind on deck can be cold, and conditions on the open water change fast.
Yes. It runs in summer, when Iceland has very long daylight hours, so the light stays bright well into the evening.
Minke whales, white-beaked dolphins and harbour porpoises, and possibly humpback whales.
It can be, even on a calm summer evening. Warm overalls are provided, but bring warm layers and sturdy shoes.
