About the whale watching yacht cruise

This cruise leaves from Reykjavík's Old Harbour and heads out into Faxaflói Bay, the same waters used by the bigger whale watching boats, but on a smaller yacht with a more relaxed feel. The crew knows the bay well and will point out whatever is around, from minke whales to the occasional humpback.

You spend most of the trip on deck scanning the water, with an indoor cabin to warm up in between sightings. Faxaflói Bay is fairly sheltered, but it is still the North Atlantic, so dress warmly even on a sunny day. Sightings are never guaranteed, since you are looking for wild animals, but minke whales and white-beaked dolphins are seen regularly and humpbacks show up often too.

From mid-May to mid-August you also have a good chance of puffins on the water near their nesting cliffs. Outside that window the trip is mostly about whales and dolphins. The tour runs all year, and winter trips have shorter daylight but often calmer seas.

Questions people ask

Are whale sightings guaranteed?

No, these are wild animals. Minke whales and dolphins are seen on most trips, and if nothing is spotted the operator offers a free return trip.

Do you need to be experienced on boats?

No. The yacht has indoor seating and toilets, and the crew looks after everyone on board.

What should I wear?

Warm, windproof layers. Even on a sunny day it is cold on the water, and you will want time on the open deck.

Loved this whale watching tour

Really nice trip, luxurious boat and saw the whales up close. Beautiful day and great views over Reykjavik and the mountains.

Saw 5 whales on this great trip

We had a great time, happy I chose this one as it is much smaller than the other whale boats I saw in Reykjavik. We had a very easy time on the sea and saw at least 5 whales on our trip. Beautiful weather in January and not too cold. Really enjoyed the trip.

Great experience - I have magnificent photos

What an amazing experience we had on this whale watching tour. The tour is operated on a yacht and it was a very comfortable ride with enough space for everyone. We were able to get close enough to the whales that we took amazing photos of them and saw them swim through the sea. A great experience that I will remember forever.
