The helicopter flies south-west over the lava plains to the eruption sites. You see new lava next to old, moss-covered lava, and the crater rows where the ground opened, from Fagradalsfjall to Sundhnúkur. A 24–105 mm or 70–200 mm lens works well for photos.

About the volcano helicopter tour

Since 2021 the Reykjanes Peninsula has had a long run of eruptions, first at Fagradalsfjall, Meradalir and Litli-Hrútur, and later along the Sundhnúkur crater row near Grindavík. The result is a landscape of black and grey lava laid over older, moss-covered lava fields, with fresh craters still steaming in places.

From the air you see the whole picture: how far the lava flowed, the defence walls built to protect Grindavík and the Svartsengi power plant, and the line of craters. The flight leaves from Reykjavík Domestic Airport and takes about 35–40 minutes in total. If weather, wind, air traffic and volcanic gas allow, the pilot lands so you can step out for a short while.

Eruptions start and stop without warning, so there may or may not be flowing lava on the day you fly. Even without an active eruption the new lava fields are a strong sight. Helicopter flights depend on the weather, and a flight can be moved or cancelled at short notice if wind or cloud make it unsafe.

  • Easy: you only walk to and from the helicopter
  • Flowing lava cannot be guaranteed; eruptions start and stop without warning
  • The landing depends on weather, wind, air traffic and volcanic gas
  • Flights run all year but depend on the weather; if the forecast is poor, the operator first offers another time that day or another date, and gives a full refund if neither works
  • All ages can fly; there are infant (0–1), child (2–12) and adult tickets
  • After booking, the operator emails you the exact start time and asks for each passenger's approximate weight
  • Free cancellation up to 15 days before the flight. 10% is charged if you cancel 15 to 3 days before, 50% within 72 hours, and 100% within 24 hours.
  • The flight runs with as few as 1 passenger
  • Each helicopter seats up to 5 or 6 passengers, depending on the aircraft; passengers over 120 kg pay for 1.5 seats

Questions people ask

Will I see flowing lava?

Only if an eruption is active on the day. The flight goes over the recent eruption sites either way, and the new lava fields and craters are worth seeing even when things are quiet.

Do we land?

The pilot lands at the eruption site when weather and restrictions in the area allow. A landing is never guaranteed.

Where does the flight leave from?

From the helicopter hangar at Reykjavík Domestic Airport on Nauthólsvegur, about 15–20 minutes on foot from downtown.

What happens if the weather is bad?

Safety comes first. If the forecast is poor, the operator first tries another time the same day, then another date, and gives a full refund if neither is possible.

Excellent tour even though there was no active volcano

excellent tour - did this tour in March 2026 and even though there was no active volcano it was great to see the new craters, lava and volcanoes that erupted in the recent years.

Magnificent

Did this tour for the eruption in end of November 2024 and this was one of the most magnificent experiences!
Would 100% recommend this if the volcano is erupting.

Amazing Helicopter Tour!

We had the most amazing time on this helicopter tour to see the erupting volcano! This is a once in a lifetime experience that me and my family are so thankful for. Everything was operated very smoothly and we were able to fly over the volcano to see the eruption - simply amazing!
