Skaftafell sits at the edge of Vatnajökull National Park and is a popular base for both summer glacier hikes and winter ice cave visits on glaciers such as Svínafellsjökull and Falljökull.
The area also has good hiking on its own, including the trail to Svartifoss waterfall, so many visitors combine a glacier tour with some time exploring on foot.
