This whale watching and sea angling tour leaves from the small harbour of Hauganes in Eyjafjörður. You go out on a traditional wooden boat to look for whales, then try your hand at sea angling, with warm overalls and hot drinks included.
Hauganes is a small fishing village on Eyjafjörður, a long fjord in North Iceland known as one of the country's more reliable spots for whale sightings. The tour goes out on an older wooden boat rather than a fast RIB, so the pace is calm and the engine slows right down whenever whales are nearby.
Along with the whale watching, this trip includes a sea angling session, where you can try catching your own fish with tackle the crew provides. It's a relaxed, hands-on add-on rather than a serious fishing trip, and works well for families.
Everyone is given a warm, flotation-equipped overall before boarding, but the fjord can still be cool and breezy, so dress in warm layers underneath. Afterwards there's hot chocolate or coffee and traditional Icelandic pastries to warm up with. As with any whale watching trip, sightings can't be guaranteed, though Eyjafjörður has a good record for them.
No sightings can ever be guaranteed, but Eyjafjörður is one of Iceland's more reliable whale watching fjords.
That's normal. The point is the experience, and the crew helps everyone have a go.
You're given warm flotation overalls, but dress in warm layers underneath, with a hat and gloves.
You'll need your own transport. The harbour is about 25 minutes' drive from Akureyri.
