GeoSea is a geothermal sea bath on the Húsavíkurhöfði headland, on the northern edge of Húsavík, with infinity-edge pools looking out over Skjálfandi Bay. The water is hot seawater from two boreholes on the headland, kept at about 38 to 39°C and constantly flowing, so it stays clean without chemicals. It feels milder and slightly saltier than a typical hot spring.

Clear, dark nights that are good for the pools are often also good for the aurora, so you keep an eye on the sky through the evening, from the pool or on the drive back to Akureyri. The Northern Lights cannot be guaranteed.

About the Northern Lights GeoSea tour

This tour pairs two of North Iceland's better evening activities: a soak in the GeoSea sea baths in Húsavík, where the geothermal pools sit right on the cliffs above the ocean, and a chance to see the Northern Lights, either from the pool or on the way back to Akureyri.

Your guide picks you up in Akureyri in the evening and drives to Húsavík, sharing stories about the area on the way. At GeoSea you have time to relax in the warm seawater pools, which stay a comfortable temperature even on a cold, clear night, the kind of conditions that are also good for spotting the aurora.

The Northern Lights depend on solar activity and clear skies and are never guaranteed, but combining the trip with GeoSea means the evening is worthwhile even on a cloudy night. Bring a swimsuit and towel, and warm clothes for getting to and from the pool.
