About the Isafjordur puffin tour

Vigur is a small island in Ísafjarðardjúp fjord, home to one family who farm eider duck down and run the island as a nature reserve. It is one of the more peaceful wildlife trips in the Westfjords: no crowds, just the island, the birds and the sea.

After the boat crossing from Ísafjörður you walk the island's paths with a guide, past puffin burrows on the cliffs and the eider colony that gives the farm its income. There is also Iceland's last standing wooden windmill and farm buildings you can look around.

The season runs from mid-May to the end of September, when the puffins and other seabirds are on the island; outside these months they are out at sea. Bring warm layers even in summer, since it is exposed on the water and the island itself has little shelter.

Questions people ask

Are puffins guaranteed?

No, they're wild birds, but Vigur has a strong colony and sightings are very likely during the season, mid-May to September.

How do we get to Ísafjörður for the departure?

You need to make your own way to Ísafjörður; this tour covers the boat trip and island visit from there.

Is it suitable for children?

Yes, all ages can join. The walk is on grass with some moderate slopes, and children should stay close to the group near the cliffs and the eider colony.

What happens outside the puffin season?

Outside roughly April to September the puffins are out at sea, so the tour focuses on the eider colony, farm and scenery instead.

Great day - highly recommend!

Such a great tour with friendly locals. The boat ride was beautiful but stepping on to the island and taking a walk around this secluded island was very unique. We saw probably hundreds of puffins and it was such a nice day!
