About the Westfjords tour

The Westfjords are a finger of steep mountains and narrow fjords hanging off the north-west of Iceland, and they see a fraction of the visitors the south coast and Golden Circle get. This three day trip is a good way to see the highlights without driving yourself on the region's slower, sometimes gravel, mountain roads.

Day one runs out along the peninsula to Látrabjarg, Europe's westernmost point and one of its largest bird cliffs, then on to the red-tinted sand of Rauðasandur. Day two crosses to Dynjandi, a series of waterfalls fanning out down a hillside, before reaching Ísafjörður, the region's main town, for the second night. Day three loops the Seven Fjords Route back towards Reykjavík, stopping at the Arctic Fox Centre and the Ósvör fishing station.

This is a minibus tour with a guide, running from June to mid-September, and it suits most people in reasonably fit condition; walks at each stop are short. Weather in the Westfjords changes quickly even in summer, so bring proper layers and be ready for wind on the cliff tops. Roads are mountainous with some gravel sections, so it can be a long day in the seat, but the scenery does the work.

Questions people ask

Do we need to change hotels each night?

Yes. Night 1 is at Hótel Flókalundur in Vatnsfjörður and night 2 at Hotel Torg in Ísafjörður, both with private bathrooms and breakfast included.

Will we see puffins?

Puffins are usually at Látrabjarg from around May to August, but they are wild birds and sightings can't be guaranteed.

Is it a lot of driving?

Yes. The Westfjords' fjord roads are slow and winding, so some days involve several hours on the minibus between stops.

What's not included that we should budget for?

Lunches and dinners on all three days are not included, so bring some cash or a card for cafés along the route.
