Lava cave tours

Lava caves are tunnels left behind when the outer skin of a lava flow cooled and hardened while molten rock kept moving underneath. Caves such as Raufarhólshellir and Víðgelmir are close enough to Reykjavik for a half-day trip, and a guide points out details you would otherwise walk straight past.

What to expect underground

Lava caves stay a few degrees above freezing all year, so bring a warm layer even in summer. Sturdy shoes matter, the floor is uneven rock, not a paved path.

Most tours provide helmets and headlamps, and sometimes crampons if there is ice inside. Check what is included when you book.

Raufarhólshellir is the more accessible option, with walkways in the show cave section. Víðgelmir is Iceland's largest lava tube and involves more scrambling.

These tours run rain or shine, since you are underground, which makes them a solid choice on a wet day on the South Coast or West Iceland.

Questions people ask

Is it cold inside a lava cave?

Yes, the temperature stays low year-round, usually just above freezing. Bring a warm layer regardless of the season outside.

Do I need caving experience?

No. Guided lava cave tours are designed for visitors with no experience. You walk, sometimes duck or scramble a little, but no climbing gear is needed.

Is it suitable for claustrophobia?

Most show caves have reasonably high ceilings for much of the route, but tight sections do occur. Ask us in advance if this is a concern.

What is provided?

Most tours include a helmet and headlamp. Some, especially in icy conditions, also provide crampons.

Can this be combined with other tours?

Yes, lava caves near the South Coast or Golden Circle are easy to combine with waterfalls or a volcano tour in the same day.
